Becahi tennis gets past the Hurricanes
The outcome of Bethlehem Catholic’s 5-2 tennis victory over Liberty would come down to singles wins for the Hawks and possible doubles wins for the Hurricanes, but that all changed when Becahi’s Kaitlyn Hartman and Sydney Foss won at two doubles 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
“We were pretty concerned about doubles,” said Hartman. “Hitting down the line was effective, and we talk throughout the point and call the ball.”
Hartman and Foss were also concerned about losing the second set.
“We were pretty evenly matched, so we started thinking what to do to win the third set,” said Foss. “Kaitlyn hit to their backhand more, and then I could volley. It was making me think more about coming up with lobs.”
Liberty’s Braden Drake and Margeaux Donchez did win their three doubles match 6-3, 6-4, and Gabby Palermo and Lexi Montero won at four doubles 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, also for Liberty.
“This was definitely our best game, and I feel good about what we did,” said Donchez. “We had a lot of good volleys that got us a lot of points. We tried not to hit to the net person or they would slam it, so we hit cross court.”
Between making sure they communicated well and figuring out Becahi’s system, Drake and Donchez were able to win in two sets.
“I just notice where everything is [on the court], and if I see a person at the net in the middle, I try to move it down the line,” Drake said.
In singles play, Brenna Magliochetti won 6-1, 6-0, Molly Ehrig won 6-0, 6-2, and Jenna Sloan won 6-2, 6-4.
Becahi also defeated Northampton last week 6-1, but lost to Freedom on Monday 5-2.
