Bethlehem Cath. blows by Eagles
It was a test of grit and resiliency on Saturday night for Bethlehem Catholic and Hawks answered against Nazareth in resounding fashion.
Trailing 20-13 at halftime against the Blue Eagles, Becahi exploded in the second half, outscoring Nazareth 38-7 en route to a 51-27 victory.
Matt Bisko poured in three rushing scores on the night and Tavion Banks added 200 yards of total offense (149 rushing) and two touchdowns to pace Becahi to a 4-0 start to the season.
After a sloppy first half performance, head coach Joe Henrich was happy his team was able to come back for the win.
“I’m glad that we were able to turn things around,” said Henrich. “We didn’t play well in the first half, but we came out of halftime and were able to reverse that trend.”
Mistakes plagued Becahi throughout the night, as they committed 17 penalties for 151 yards, but Becahi was able to overcome those mistakes with their size grinding down the Blue Eagles (1-3) in the second half.
The Hawks rushed for 257 yards on the night and scored five rushing TD’s.
Becahi demonstrated their will to power the ball with their opening drive of the second half, going 58-yards on seven carries, capped off by a two-yard TD run by Banks.
Banks would then connect with Javon Clements on a 55-yard TD strike to put Becahi ahead 30-20 in the third quarter and they never looked back.
Still, Nazareth’s Jahan Dotson showed everyone why he’ll be heading to UCLA next fall, hauling in 13 receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns on the night, but it wasn’t enough for Nazareth.
For Henrich, Saturday’s home effort still had room for improvement after the slow start.
“It’s concerning to have us perform like that in the first half,” he said. “We haven’t been practicing well for the type of talent we have.”
The Hawks shouldn’t have a problem getting up for this week’s contest on Friday night against Liberty.
It’ll be the first city clash between the three Bethlehem schools this season and it comes at a time where Liberty is hurting.
The Hurricanes (1-3) fell to Whitehall last week 41-20, dropping their third straight game of the season.
What might be worse than the loss was quarterback Todd Erney sustaining an injury early in the game.
His status for this week’s game with the Hawks was undisclosed at midweek.
“I would think that playing against Liberty is always an energizer for the kids,” Henrich said. “It’s a rivalry game but we don’t want to make any one particular game bigger than another. It should be a fun week.”
