Volleyball heads into tougher slate
If there’s one thing that the top volleyball teams in the East Penn Conference look forward to, it’s taking on the best the league has to offer.
Liberty will get that opportunity this week when they battle Emmaus Friday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Hurricanes (3-0) have had an easy slate to open their season, picking up a trio of consecutive sweeps over Pleasant Valley, Pocono Mountain West and East Stroudsburg South, but move into real league play tonight when they travel to Whitehall (2-0) and then cap off the week at home against the Hornets (2-0).
Head coach Missy Lynn is looking forward to the opportunity to see her team compete against some of the league’s more polished programs.
“I’ve had the Emmaus match circled since the schedule came out this summer,” said Lynn. “They have an extremely talented team and how we play against them should be a great indicator of where we fall within the conference.”
Liberty is still working out some kinks early in the season, but Lynn feels that those should be ironed out sooner than later with the meat of the schedule picking up heading into this week.
“We’re a bit inconsistent right now,” she said. “If we can limit the unforced errors, we should do really well. Unfortunately, we didn’t have our full lineup for either tournament, so we aren’t getting the reps we need. Hopefully everyone can get healthy from this point forward.”
Freedom (1-2) suffered a pair of losses to Parkland (2-0) and Central Catholic (2-0) last week, getting swept by both of the league’s top two programs in a tough start for the Patriots.
The Pates look to get back on track this week with matches against Northampton (3-0), Stroudsburg (0-3) and Pocono Mountain East (0-2).
Bethlehem Catholic (3-0) took care of their EPC Mountain division opponents, sweeping all three (East Stroudsburg South, Pleasant Valley and Pocono Mountain West) to start the year.
The real test comes this week, when Becahi squares off tonight against Emmaus and then takes on another league contender in Nazareth (3-0) on Friday.
