Expectations were high for a close Northampton versus Bethlehem Catholic tennis match on Monday, but things did not play out as anticipated when the Hawks won 6-1.

It was expected that the Hawks would win the singles matches, which they did, and that the K-Kids would win the doubles matches, but only Liz Moore and Shannon Reinhard were able to accomplish a victory at four doubles.

“We were excited to play a more challenging team today. My cross court shots were really good, and Liz was good at the net,” said Reinhard. “My serves got a little better [since last year] and knowing where to control the ball and aim it.”

Moore and Reinhard won their match by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

“I think I have better placement at the net, and my serves improved,” Moore said.

At three doubles, Jess Grello and Syd Schmall lost 3-6, 4-6, and at two doubles, Regan Hobsy and Kaleigh Kauffman lost 4-6, 6-7.

“We lost two doubles in a tiebreaker and were ahead in three doubles but lost. They had no heart and no desire,” said a disappointed Coach Kim Davis. “They were inconsistent.”

Although Northampton’s singles players lost their matches, Liz Hozza and Rose Sharga were up against a state finalist and a state champion, respectively, while Grace Tepes is still learning.

With a match against Liberty, past Press deadlines, and a match against Emmaus later in the week, Davis hopes the KKids will show what they can really do.

“From here it will get a little tougher with better teams,” said Reinhard, “but I think we’ll get better with more experience.”
