Mounties knock off the K-Kids

First, the shutout streak was snapped. Twenty-five minutes later, the winning streak disappeared too.

Through the first 225 minutes of the season, the Northampton field hockey team did not allow a goal. After taking a 1-0 lead very early in the Sept. 12 contest against Stroudsburg, it looked like the K-Kids might cruise to another victory.

But then the momentum shifted.

Stroudsburg junior Josie Sweeney converted a penalty stroke with 15 minutes left in the second half and freshman Amanda Duke scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Lady Mounties a 2-1 victory.

Northampton junior Abby Piotrowski scored the opening goal 1:57 into the game.

The K-Kids had several scoring chances in the first half and finished the game with a 14-8 advantage on corners.

Head coach Carrie Saul acknowledged that sometimes scoring a goal so early can lead to some negative habits as the game progresses.

“It’s a blessing and a curse,” Saul said.

She felt that her squad went into a defensive mindset too early in the contest instead of pressing for that second goal.

“We had our opportunities in the first half and we have to finish those opportunities, making sure that we capitalize on our corners by getting that ball in the cage,” Saul said.

Northampton travels to East Stroudsburg South on Sept. 14 before a string of three consecutive home games on the 16th, 18th, and 20th.
