LHS-FHS split in soccer doubleheader
Indescribable at first, but soon after an emotional, nail-biting, girl-boy soccer doubleheader between Freedom and Liberty on Monday night at BASD Stadium, the words finally came.
“Absolutely amazing,” said Freedom captain Julia Ackerman when the Patriots defeated the Hurricanes 3-2 in the first game of the night. “We knew we had a better chance than ever because we’ve been working so hard, we’re incredibly passionate, and we’ve got great speed.”
In the second game, the Hurricanes defeated the Patriots 1-0 when Christian Tackett scored a goal in the final three minutes.
“It’s the greatest feeling you could possibly get. I saw the opportunity and I slid it away,” Tackett said. “We had a little difficulty finding our form in front of the net, but it just took the resilience to get that goal.”
For Liberty goalkeeper Blake Koski, it became 457 minutes of clean sheets.
“On the last one, the ball goes right into the lights, and I couldn’t see it for a split second. I was really scared but it went right into my hands, thankfully,” said Koski. “I’ve never been in a Freedom-Liberty game in my life. It’s a great feeling.”
Both teams came into the match undefeated with outstanding showings by both Koski and Freedom keeper Derek Bast, who made multiple difficult saves.
In the girls’ game, Freedom led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Haley Gschrey. Katherine Wescoe tied the game for Liberty, but Doris Muncan put the Pates ahead with a shot to the far post.
Merve Okumus tied the game again for the Hurricanes, but Gschrey scored the game winner.
“I think scoring first sped up our game,” said Gschrey.
Okumus and Muller had assists for Liberty, and Amber Buck, Andie Graney, and Muncan had assists for Freedom.
Bridget MacDonald made nine saves for the Canes, and Jenelle Romig made eight saves for the Pates.
“I’m so happy,” Muncan said. “For all the years I’ve been here, I always heard about the Freedom Liberty game. I kind of wanted to cry a little bit.”
