Kids improve to 2-1 on the season
For most head coaches in the East Penn Conference, seeing a “2” in the completions column at the end of a game might cause a nightmare.
For Northampton’s Mark Scisly, it is a welcomed sight.
The K-Kids rushed the ball 52 times for 254 yards in a 24-7 victory over Pleasant Valley.
Junior Aiden Jones capped Northampton’s opening possession with a 12-yard touchdown run in a drive that saw zero pass attempts.
“One of the things coming into this year was that we wanted to control the clock and keep our defense off the field,” Scisly said. “Last year I felt that we wasted too many three-and-outs and we wanted to emphasize the run game in the offseason.”
Senior quarterback Josh Smith only completed two passes on the evening, but they were both impactful. Smith connected with senior Zach Liggitt for a lengthy third down conversion in the first half, then again for a 54-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Four different players – Jones, Smith, Hunter Wacik and Tyrese Brandon had at least 10 carries for the K-Kids. Wacik sealed the game with a 16-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Pleasant Valley junior Nasai Moon provided the only offensive spark for the Bears. Moon came close to breaking a kickoff return twice in the first half, then scored on a 55-yard run in the second quarter. Northampton outgained Pleasant Valley 327-232.
Following two wins against the EPC’s North Division, the K-Kids must find some success against the tougher South Division. Northampton travels to Freedom on Sept. 15 after falling to Bethlehem Catholic 48-0 in Week 2.
“Freedom’s a very good defensive team and just like Becahi, they’re going to fly to the ball,” Scisly said. “They’re fast and they’re physical.”
