Freedom girls down Bethlehem Catholic

Freedom’s girls’ soccer team had a 1-0 lead on Bethlehem Catholic at halftime, but four more goals by the Patriots would put the game away at 5-2 on Saturday at Becahi.

“I think we came into this game strong, and we knew it was going to be a challenge,” said Freedom mid/forward Doris Muncan, who scored the Patriots’ second goal. “We worked on our technical skill, but today, we just had a good game. Basically, on all our goals, we did a good job connecting passes, which I’m really proud of.”

Muncan had an assist on Haley Gschrey’s header in the first half. Gschrey also scored in the last 30 seconds of the game.

“I was trying to focus on trying to get myself open and score for the team,” Gschrey said. “I always try to focus on hitting with my laces and trying not to kill it as much as placing it.”

In the final minute, Gschrey had just the right touch, a combination of power and placement, to end the game.

Andie Graney added two more goals for Freedom, one at 18:40 and the next at 17:02. Lily Judge had one assist.

Becahi began a comeback when Brooke Bisko scored at 13:10 and 9:58. Samantha Gaydos had one assist.

“We had a little bit of a breakdown toward the end, and I think we took it a little bit for granted,” said Freedom goalkeeper Nasia Palaios. “We have to play 100 percent all the time.”

The Patriots had knowledge of the Hawks’ recent game against Liberty which was halted due to thunderstorms. Becahi is leading 2-1 with approximately 20 minutes left in the first half.

“We were trying to strategize and everything,” Palaios said. “We know how they play, so we just tried to counteract.”

Palaios made 11 saves.

“[Our defense] really focused on getting balls out of the air, flat passes, and they were communicating very well,” Palaios said.

Caitlin Vogrins made 20 saves for the Hawks, coming up big on several difficult saves throughout the game.

Earlier in the week, Freedom had a disappointing 2-0 loss against Easton under the lights at Freedom.

“That really hit me emotionally. I think we came into that game strong, and we knew it was going to be a challenge,” said Muncan.

Also last week, Becahi defeated Allen 9-0.

Emma Pfeiffer had a hat trick, Bisko scored two goals, and Mandala deSantis, Megan Shiffert, Sarah Knoble, and Mary Kate O’Reilly had a goal apiece.

Assists were made by Rachel Rutkowski, who had two, Jenna Thomas, Gabrielle Soares, Emma Carreras, Bisko, Knoble, and Pfeiffer.

Vogrins made two saves against Allen, and Jasmin Francis made 11 saves for Allen.

Liberty defeated Dieruff last week by a score of 10-2.

The Hurricanes led 5-1 at halftime with goals by Merve Okumus, Chardea Stone, Katherine Wescoe, Jessica DelCorso, and Madison Muller.

Catherine Kelly had two assists, and Wescoe had one.

DelCorso, Okumus, Muller, Wescoe, and Kelly scored in the second half, and assists were made by Alicia Chambers, Haley Jupina, and Okumus.
