LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Field hockey season ramps up this week

It’s been a slow start to the field hockey season for area teams, as games have been backlogged due to postponements last week.

Liberty (1-0) headed into this week with just a lone 4-1 win over Easton up to date, while Freedom (1-2) and Bethlehem Catholic (1-2) were both sitting behind the .500 mark.

Liberty should get a full week coming up, starting with yesterday’s biggest league tilt against Emmaus (4-0) before hosting Pocono Mountain West (0-5) on Thursday and Freedom Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots hope that they can add some wins to their season this week when they took on Pleasant Valley (1-2) yesterday and Dieruff on Thursday.

With their lone season win coming against East Stroudsburg North, Freedom head coach Brianna Musselman is looking at the positives.

“The biggest thing that we took away from that game was that we are able to score, because that is something we are working on,” she said of their 2-0 win over the Timberwolves. “We also learned that we need to score more often and use every opportunity we have in the offensive circle.”

After losing to Stroudsburg 4-0 last week, Musselman is hoping that the team can take lessons from the loss.

“Considering Stroudsburg was in the district final last season, our outcome was a good fight with our defensive unit coming out strong,” Musselman said.

Bethlehem Catholic finally got on the winning end following Monday’s 4-0 victory over Pocono Mountain West.

The Hawks were coming off a pair of 4-0 and 10-0 defeats to Northampton and Emmaus respectively last week.

With a slate against Pocono Mountain East (3-0-1) and Dieruff this week, the Hawks hope to find more success.
