A Blessing Box, stocked with a variety of canned and boxed food, along Northampton’s Main Street has attracted the curious as well as individuals and families in need.
Candace and Dave Strain, owners of J’s Steaks & Subs, installed a redwood box with three shelves in front of their eatery, 1830 Main St., as a way for those in the community to donate food to those less fortunate and for those in need to take some food items.
There are no questions asked or forms to be filled out, Candace Strain said.
“It is an entire family project - my children, Liam, Olivia and Aleea; my husband, Dan; and myself,” she added of the construction and upkeep of the Blessing Box.
The response from the public has been gratifying. A continual flow of food donations has kept the box full, Candace Strain said, adding the family is not accepting monetary donations, but instead asking donors to buy food - everything from canned vegetables and cereal to tuna in pouches and macaroni and cheese, and anything in between.
She said social media has been helpful, adding people are seeing the call for food donations on Facebook.
Candace Strain said the box will remain in place “as long as there is hunger.”
The reward for the Strain family is knowing they created a small way to help others in need.
