Kids win opener

Northampton’s football team had a memorable opening week of the season, but how long can it last for the Kids?

The Kids dominated their opener at East Stroudsburg North, shutting out the Timberwolves 31-0 to kickoff their season.

Northampton’s ground game controlled the contest, compiling 231 yards, while the defense kept ESN’s total offensive yardage to 95 yards to cap off an opening week shutout.

“Our emphasis throughout camp has been on establishing a ball-control offense to keep our defense off the field,” said head coach Mark Scisly. “The players have worked hard and our run game looks like it will be much improved from last year.

“Having an experienced group on defense allows us to do more on that side of the ball and they also look comfortable out there recognizing the opposing teams formations and plays.”

Three different Kids scored last Friday night with running back Hunter Wacik leading the team with 78 yards rushing. He opened the scoring with an eight-yard TD in the first period, while Tyreese Brandon (69-yards rushing) added a seven-yard TD run in the second to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.

A 26-yard field goal by Josh Santos opened things up in the third quarter before quarterback Josh Smith hit Zach Liggitt with a 23-yard TD pass for a 25-0 lead after a converted two-point conversion.

Smith would finish things off in the fourth quarter with a nine-yard TD run, as he finished the night 3-of-6 for 47 yards and an interception. He also added 41 yards rushing.

After dealing with a patch of rough seasons recently, Friday’s win was a confidence builder.

“Opening the season with a win is always a big confidence builder and hopefully it will provide momentum as we play tougher teams on our schedule,” said Scisly. “We have a lot of hard working kids that gained valuable experience last year playing as underclassmen. This group seems to be very driven and motivated toward having a great season.”

Now, the Kids (1-0) come back home for a difficult test against Bethlehem Catholic (1-0) Friday night.

The Hawks blasted Pocono Mountain West 58-14 last week, providing a much stiffer dose of competition this week as they head into their EPC South portion of their schedule.

“Becahi is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball,” Scisly said. “We have to control the ball on offense and limit giving up big plays on defense.”
