The Borough of Northampton is awaiting word from Northampton County on whether its grant application for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for street improvements will receive the green light.
Borough Planner Victor Rodite informed borough Manager LeRoy Brobst the state had received its CDBG allocation from the federal government.
“In my opinion, Northampton County should soon get their application of funds as well,” Rodite said. “Then, it is up to the county to hopefully approve our grant application and authorize the next step, an environmental review of our project, and then an award of funds.
“We ended up applying for $127,800 for paving 15 street segments using our Northampton Public Works Department and their equipment to carry out the project. In addition, we submitted a second CDBG grant application for $10,000 to cover some of the cost of updating the Northampton comprehensive plan,” he said.
Regarding the comprehensive plan, Rodite said residents continue to submit completed survey forms that asked for their comments on matters in the community. Topping the list of suggestions: construction of a large pavilion along the Lehigh River, improvement of borough street conditions and use of the street-sweeping machine to clear broken glass along the route to the glass recycling center.
