Paul E. Merkel, 86, of Alburtis, died Aug, 21, 2017, in his residence. He was the husband of the late Gladys E. (Miller) Merkel, who died Oct. 14, 1999. Born in Alburtis, he was a son of the late Adam and Mary (Krasukak) Merkel.

He was a 1949 graduate of Emmaus High School.

He worked in the parts department at the former Caloric Corporation, Topton, for many years, until the plant closed in 1991. He also worked for Frank Hunsel’s Mink Farm, Alburtis, for several years.

He was an avid gardener who enjoyed the wildlife around his home. He was also a cat lover.

He is survived by a son, Kerry P. and his wife Barbara F. (Kehm), of Kutztown; three grandchildren, Jessica A. wife of Kevin A. O’Neil, Aaron K. and Matthew K., all of Kutztown; one great-granddaughter, Emma D. O’Neil; brothers, Dr. Joseph, of Sturgis, Mich., and Thomas, of Lehighton. He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Hemphill and a brother, William.
