Public response to Allen Township’s dog park on Savage Road has been overwhelming, so much so that the board of supervisors is seeking a second round of grant funding from Northampton County to keep pace with the services provided for its use.
Chairman Larry Oberly said township Manager Ilene Eckhart will work out the details of the application, which will be submitted to the county. He said parking and a proposed pavilion may be the pillars of the proposed grant.
“I am hopeful,” Oberly said of having the grant approved. The project could be undertaken in 2018.
At the June 27 supervisors meeting, Eckhart was given the green light to write the grant proposal and submit it to the county for consideration in the prescribed Sept. 1-30 time frame.
Regarding the use of the dog park, Oberly said township residents and those living outside of Allen Township are permitted to have their dogs at the park. There is no fee for use of the grounds.
With little shade or no shade in the area, a pavilion for pet owners could be helpful. The present 16-vehicle parking area fills up quickly, as the Nor-Bath Trail is next to the dog park. Although framed by mature long-standing trees at the rear and sides of the dog park, a number of recently planted trees are on the grounds.
The dog park has agility stations and running water for the dogs.
The $82,240 dog park came about with the aid of a $69,000 open space county grant. Work began late in 2015 with township public works personnel having a major role in the work.
