Bethlehem camps another success

Fifty girls, ages 8-15, participated in Bethlehem Sports Camps’ softball camp July 17-21 at Freedom High School.

“It’s been awesome,” said Bethlehem Sports Camps director Joe Stellato. “There’s nothing you can do about the heat, but...”

Patriot softball players Kylie Pinho, Jana Boksan, Julia Roman, Taylor Resetar, Maddy Sheffer, and Makenzie Smith assisted Stellato, Freedom softball coach Nora Borger, and Lehigh Carbon Community College coach Jenn Shellhammer throughout the week.

“I thought it would be fun to teach the little kids,” said Pinho. “They listen and absorb information but don’t really use it. The younger ones’ habits are just forming, so we’re trying to teach them good habits, and the older ones are always changing, so they learn what is incorrect.”

Players were instructed in fundamental skills and strategies, including hitting, pitching, catching, fielding, and base running.

“I’ve been moving around with hitting off the tees and teaching them the basic stance for that, and tracking balls in the infield and outfield,” Pinho said.

Later this summer, Freedom’s softball team will host its first annual golf outing on Aug. 26 at Morgan Hill Golf Course.

The cost is $95 per golfer or $380 per foursome, which includes golf, dinner, and a chance to win a 2017 Camaro and other prizes.
