School board approves agenda items
Whitehall-Coplay School Board gathered July 10 for a brief meeting in the district’s administration building.
“With school not in session, the board meeting was primarily used for business matters,” Whitehall-Coplay School District Superintendent Dr. Lorie Hackett said. “The next board meeting in August should have more involved, with us gearing up for the 2017-18 school year.”
All items on the agenda’s docket were approved by the board, including the district’s fiscal report, which, as of June 30, stands with a current balance of $501,893.07.
Bills and salaries for various funds, including the general fund, cafeteria fund, capital projects fund and capital reserve fund, were approved.
Offseason athletic activities and competitions were approved, as were various contracts between WCSD and outside organizations.
Resignations include math paraprofessional Ashley Snyder (Zephyr Elementary School), second-grade teacher Jason Griess (Steckel Elementary School), art teacher Allison Dearing (Whitehall High School) and speech/language paraprofessional Tyler Lawson (Steckel).
New hires include temporary professionals Erin Dolan for inclusion (WHS), Kevin Miller for music (Zephyr) and Jeri Bonenberger for academic strategies/sixth-grade English/language arts (Whitehall-Coplay Middle School). Miranda Dangler was hired as a substitute for academic strategies/English (WCMS). Peggy Lalik was hired in a support staff position as level II secretary (Gockley Elementary School). Rula Khoury was hired as a cafeteria worker (Zephyr). Lisa Saylor was hired as the district webmaster for the 2017-18 school year.
The approval of fall sport coaches went into effect, and 12 teachers within the district were granted tenure - Elizabeth Burnett, WHS; Elizabeth Crawford, Tiffany Dancho, April Harakal, David Lengyl, Amy Miller, Kelly Repasch and Kyle Stout, Zephyr; Amelia Laders and Rebecca Young, Steckel; and Angelica DeLucia and Demi Ogozalek, Gock- ley.
The next school board meeting will be held 7 p.m. Aug. 14. Committee meetings regarding operations/transportation, finance/personnel and education/student activities will take place 4 p.m. Aug. 28.

A clarification from a recent article that detailed the 2017-18 budget approval: At the June 12 meeting, Whitehall-Coplay School Board voted 6-2 to pass the 2017-18 budget. Owen Eberhart and Bill Leiner Jr., board treasurer, voted no.
