NW girls earn 8 firsts
Northwest’s swim meet against Westwood Heights resulted in eight first place finishes for Northwest’s girls last Thursday night.
In the age 9 & 10 25 backstroke, Lora Flynn took first place with a time of 21.27.
Alyvia Herman won the age 11 & 12 50 free with a time of 35.15.
“The last time I swam it, it was easier, but in the crescendo, it’s a sprint, so I wanted to swim it [like that],” said Herman. “I like the crescendo because it’s dark, and the lights are on, and it’s fun because everyone is super fast and cheering.”
The crescendo is a relay with five swimmers competing, one from each age group.
In the age 13 & 14 50 backstroke, Charlotte Samuelson placed first with a time of 38.92.
“The backstroke has always been my favorite. I think I’m more comfortable because my face is out of the water, and I can breathe easier,” Samuelson said.
This summer marks Samuelson’s eighth year on Northwest’s swim team.
“I just like how it’s one big family,” said Samuelson. “I’m a pretty competitive person, and I do like to win, but the most important is the family.”
Although diving results were unavailable at press time, Samuelson also competed in the diving event, performing a front dive, a back flip, and an inward.
“I think I did well on the personal dives. I don’t do the crazy twists like other people do, but I get good scores doing the basics,” she said.
In the age 13 & 14 50 breaststroke, Sammy Jo Mikosky came in first with a time of 41.94.
Abby Mack won the age 15 & over 100 free with a time of 1:04.42, and the 100 IM with a time of 1:16.43.
Also in the age 15 & over, Jaclyn Baker took first place in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 42.60.
Baker, Mack, Samuelson, and Greta Stuckey combined to win the 13& over 200 medley relay with a time of 2:23.99.
