Summer camp
East Allen Township opened Bicentennial Park to 150 day campers June 19. Recreation Director Chuck Frantz organizes the event every year.
“Spaces usually fill up a few weeks after the sign-up period opens. This is always a popular event with our residents,” he said.
This year, the program runs through Aug. 2.
“It’s seven weeks, and that leaves the month of August for family vacations,” Frantz said. “We end the camp day around 1 p.m., so it gives the kids time to spend time with their neighborhood friends.”
This year’s special events include visits from Wildlands Conservancy and Bethlehem Mounted Police and a trip to Lehigh Valley Zoo.
“Wildlands always brings in some animals, and the kids really enjoy learning about them,” Frantz said.
Last year, the camp made a significant donation to bring a giraffe to the Lehigh Valley Zoo.
“The kids collected coins and made the donation. We are collecting coins again this year. We have a field trip scheduled for July 12 to go to the zoo and feed the giraffe,” Frantz said.
Frantz has planned other field trips for movies and bowling; there is even a Saturday night special for an IronPigs baseball game at Coca-Cola Park.
Rita’s is a day camp sponsor. Every Thursday, a container of Rita’s Ice is delivered to the camp site.
And, if the kids need to wear pajamas one day, a shirt to tie-dye, Halloween costume or a Christmas sweater, best to go with the flow. It’s all part of the grand plan!
