East Allen’s Dogwood Road project put on a fast track

East Allen Township Engineer James Milot ran through the details of the Dogwood Road project at the board of supervisors meeting June 22. Dogwood Road is one access road to Bicentennial Park. The problem is a culvert over a drainage ditch is collapsing. Traffic is restricted to one lane in the area.

“This was put together in two pieces,” he said. “And the newer one is failing.”

The situation is not unusual in the area. As country roads were expanded to accommodate increased traffic, they were widened while keeping the old road intact.

According to Milot, 60 days is the expected construction time.

“We will close the road during the construction,” he said.

There are alternatives to get to Bicentennial Park. The inconvenience is that construction takes place during peak park usage. Milot expects to have cost details ready for the board’s next meeting. He will be looking for approval so there is minimal delay.

Milot, in another report, proposed adding digital speed limit signs. The signs show motorists their actual speed versus the posted limit.

“These signs can’t be used as a basis for issuing tickets. A police officer needs to witness the speed to issue a ticket,” he said.

Milot and township Manager Deborah Seiple sang the praises of the devices and how effective they are in curtailing speeding motorists. Reality set in at a cost of $19,000 each. Milot indicated he might be able to secure grant money to get them installed.

The board approved Ken Beck’s application to move his English car restoration business, K&T Vintage Sports Cars, to East Allen Township. The new facility is in an industrial park on Ruch Road. Beck brought his signature pen and approved the conditions. He is expected to start work at the new location as soon as building repairs are made.

Seiple gave an early alert to an important meeting. Rock Lehigh Valley, the partnership proposing to expand warehouses along Weaversville Road, has a tentative meeting set for 7 p.m. Aug. 2. At the last attempt to hold the meeting, space was limited. This meeting is scheduled at Northampton Area High School’s auditorium to accommodate an expected crowd. The date will be confirmed.
