Since 1968, Whitehall Township has had legislation pertaining to street numbers, noting the size of the numbers and their placement on houses, businesses and other structures.
The size of the address numbers needs to be uniform, according to the legislation.
The board of commissioners, at its June 2 meeting, voted to be in compliance with the International Property Maintenance Code regarding the size of street numbers on all properties across the township.
On adopting an amendment to the well-established ordinance, commissioners agreed, “The board now desires to resolve the discrepancy.”
According to the amendment, which provides specificity, “owners and occupants of every house, building, structure or place of business in the township are to have placed in a position to be plainly legible and visible from the street or road fronting the property approved numbers at least four inches high with a minimum stroke width of one-half inch showing the street number.”
The address number is to be in Arabic numerals or alphabet letters to contrast with the background, the amendment stated.
Such uniformity is important for first responders, police, fire or ambulance personnel called to an emergency, commissioners agreed.
