Vernon C. Fenstermaker
Vernon C. Fenstermaker, 97, formerly of Allentown, died June 24, 2017, in Coopersburg.
He was the widower of Clara M. (Herber) Fenstermaker.
Born in Weisenberg Township, he was a son of the late Charles and Verdie (Kressley) Fenstermaker.
He was vice president of sales for the former Lehigh Valley Dairy before retiring after 57 years.
Past officer of the Lehigh Valley Grocers’ Association and the Food Industry Association, he was a past member of the Philadelphia Food Trades Association and the Manufacturers’ Representatives of Philadelphia.
A member of Ziegels United Church of Christ, Breinigsville, he served as an elder on the consistory for 25 years.
He honorably and faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-45.
He landed on Utah Beach in Normandy and participated in the Battle of the Bulge and received four Battle Stars for service in four campaigns in the European Theater and a Bronze Star for meritorious service.
A life member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he became a member of Rotary in 1967 and recently received his 50-year service award.
He was past president of the Whitehall Rotary Club and later a member of the Allentown West Rotary Club, where he served as secretary for many years, was a Paul Harris Fellow and a major donor.
In recognition of his 90th birthday in 2010, the Allentown West Rotary Club erected a flagpole honoring veterans at Ziegels Church.
He and his late wife loved antiquing, coin collecting and ballroom dancing.
He was an avid Phillies fan and enjoyed reading and pinochle.
His survivors include a son Dale and wife Gail, with whom he resided; daughter Joanne Gerlach and husband Detlef of York; brother Robert and wife, Mae, of Macungie; grandchildren Adam and Christopher Gerlach, Alec Fenstermaker and Lauren Witmer; great-grandchildren Holden and Clara Witmer; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother Carl.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-noon July 1 at Ziegels Union Church, 9990 Ziegels Church Road, Breinigsville.
A celebration of his life will take place noon in the church.
Interment will be at the church cemetery.
