East Allen approves St. Luke’s extension request

One particular item on the agenda of the East Allen Township Board of Supervisors meeting June 14 was a matter of some concern. The St. Luke’s Patient Center, on Route 512, requested another extension to complete its project. Township Manager Deborah Seiple introduced the item, stating St. Luke’s has requested several extensions for nearly two years. The facility is operational and accepting patients.

Nate Johnson, a project coordinator from St. Luke’s, addressed the situation.

“The delays are in the exterior environmental conditions. We agreed to preserve wetlands,” he said.

The landscaping company is having a problem germinating the seed mixture.

“We have had rainy weather that did not allow the seed to grow. We have been through two field burns and replanted everything,” Johnson said.

The area being seeded is the detention pond for the parking lot and the building.

“The geese love what is going on, but we want to get this resolved as soon as possible,” he said.

The request was for an extension to December, which the board thought was a long time.

“We have replanted everything, and we have about 70-percent coverage. Our requirement is for 75 percent. If we have a rainy summer season, we might be back at the start again,” Johnson said. “By asking for the longer extension, we are not coming back to the board multiple times.”

The board unanimously approved the extension.

In a related matter, Michelman Cancelliere Iron Works Inc., on Route 512, applied and received an air quality renewal permit. The facility is scheduled to be replaced by a new warehouse project approved by the board.

Township Engineer James Milot explained: “They are still in operation over there because they are removing parts of the building to pave the way for the new building.

“There is a bag house that needs to be removed, and that is the basis for the permit,” he said.

The bag house is a collection of filters and storage bags that hold particulates that accumulate in the air during metal fabrication.

Also at the meeting, Seiple asked the board for the go-ahead to apply for a grant from Northampton County. She proposed the grant be used to place speed warning signs along selected highways. The signs have proved to control speed in surrounding municipalities.

Milot interjected the signs cannot be used to ticket drivers who exceed the limit.

“They are designed as a reminder to motorists to keep to the posted speed limit,” he said.

Chairman Roger Unangst asked that the township manager look at costs and budgeted funds available for such a project.
