The move of Northampton Farmers Market from Uptown Park, just off Main Street, to Municipal Park, at Laubach Avenue and Smith Lane, is getting positive reviews. The venue, boosted by entertainment and ample parking, appears to have gained the support of the public.

There are more than double the vendors, selling a larger variety of goods, including vegetables, potatoes, whole chickens and meats, baked goods, cakes and pies, comfort food, jelly and jams, homemade peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, custom popcorn, smoothies, candles, oils, healthy items and more.

The market is celebrating its fifth anniversary. Covered Bridge Farm, from Allen Township, and Twin Maple Farms, from Bath, have been with the market from the outset.

Lined up along the grass, fronted by a macadam walkway for the patrons, pop-up tents give the market a festive flair. The borough’s band trailer offers a place for entertainment, provided free to the public. Northampton Area Middle and High School choral groups have performed there this season. Celtic music and other genres are planned for the coming weeks.

Borough Planner Victor Rodite, whose vision and energy has brought the farmers market to the borough, is excited about the season’s early success. Signage and word of mouth bode well for the future of the market.

Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said during a recent meeting of borough council, when he left his office across Smith Lane for a while on opening day, he was content with the steady flow of people shopping and browsing, adding people didn’t appear to have any problem parking their vehicles curbside or at the municipal lot and walking to the market.

Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Sr. expressed his thoughts on the effect the farmers market has on the community, saying by all accounts, the public is responding in great numbers.
