Salisbury High School students had their last day of school June 12. As I participated in some of the final activities for the year, I was able to reflect on my first year at SHS.

When I first walked in the doors for orientation, like everyone else, I was afraid I would get lost. This however, I soon learned would never happen, because everyone who goes to or has been to Salisbury knows, it’s just a square.

The other big change about going to the high school other than the building, were the classes. At Salisbury, students have block scheduling, which means they have four 80-minute classes one day and four different 80-minute classes the next day.

Every student has a Falcon Period for 40 minutes, which is a time which can be used as a study hall or for other activities such as hacky sack club, literary club or open gym. SHS students are mixed with different grade levels throughout their elective classes, which allows the students to see how other students, other than their grade level peers, think.

Throughout the year, students at SHS are encouraged to participate in a few of the many extracurriculars. Whether it be a sport, theater or an academic club, there is something for everyone at SHS to participate in.

This year, many of SHS’s sports teams have had some successes. Among many other accomplishments, it was the first time the field hockey team was able to compete in districts. The twirlers won the Atlantic Coast Championships. The girls and boys soccer teams qualified for the state tournament. Several swimmers and tennis players were also able to go to states. Basketball and softball players went to districts. The theater put on a play in the fall, “Shakespeare’s’ Twelfth Night,” as well as a musical in the spring, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” The band went to the Outback Bowl in January. The Scholastic Scrimmage team won its first championship since 1979, the debate team won the finals and the environmental club sold reuseable water bottles to help reduce the use of plastic.

To end the year, SHS’s graduation was held June 7. Congratulations to the Class of 2017!

Although the school year is over, there are still activities to participate in at Salisbury. The school district library will have summer hours, so check out the social media and websites for dates and times.

Sports will begin again this August, so keep an eye on your email and the website for practice start times.
