City officials, representatives from the Coalition for Appropriate Transportation (CAT) and bicycling enthusiasts took time May 19 to recognize Lehigh Valley Bike to Work Week 2017 (May 13-21). Gathering at Bethlehem City Hall, a group of about 30 were reminded that biking can be “fun, healthy, green and economical” by Mayor Bob Donchez’s representative Alex Karras.
Scott Slingerland, director of CAT, emphasized that biking is affordable and that Bethlehem residents are within a 15-minute bike ride of their regular destinations.
Lisa Ronca, owner of cutters Bike Shop on East Third Street, a program sponsor and one of two Bike Bethlehem free bike rental locations along with the Bethlehem Area Public Library’s main branch, provided free bicycle safety check-ups while reminding those in attendance that properly fitted bike helmets and hydration are important.
Sherri Penchishen, Bethlehem Health Bureau chronic disease program director, announced that Bethlehem has received a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community Award from the League of American Bicyclists and she noted that efforts to improve on that rating will continue.
Attendees enjoyed refreshments and then took a ride through the city’s north side business area escorted by Slingerland who was joined by former Bethlehem Police Chief Jason Schiffer among the group of about 15 bicyclists.
