STUDENT PROFILE Blake McGill, Bethlehem Catholic HS
Grade: 12
Family members: Dr. Jean Seibold McGill, Mr. Kerry McGill, Reagan McGill
Favorite subject: My favorite subjects are American history and U.S. government and politics because I think it is important that we have a strong understanding of our nation’s history before we can work to make change today.
Activities: Varsity soccer, speech and debate (captain), dance, theater, track and field, National Honor Society, Peer Listeners (co-president), Key Club (president)
Next steps: After graduation, I hope to attend a four-year college or university, followed by graduate school (either business school or law school).
Career goals: I hope to eventually become involved in politics, but before then I am looking to work in either social entrepreneurship or international development.
Heroes: Ronald Reagan is a hero of mine, because he united the nation during what could have been a divisive time in our country’s history.
Hobbies: Dance, reading, politics, skiing, working on political campaigns
Volunteer/community work: Cops ‘n’ kids, middle school speech program, Salsa4smiles (as a freshman I started a nonprofit to raise money for children who have cleft lip and cleft palate)
Likes: Interesting conversations, broadening my perspective, listening to speakers/lecturers, reading a good book
Dislikes: Unproductive dialogue, one-sided conversations
Greatest accomplishment (so far): My greatest accomplishment thus far is being accepted into and attending the School for Ethics and Global Leadership, a semester program for high school juniors located in Washington, D.C. There I was able to broaden my own perspective, while contributing to difficult and controversial discussions.
Advice for peers: You are never too young to have an opinion. Get involved! There are plenty of opportunities for motivated young people to make positive change in our world.
