Boys lax faces Trojans a fourth time
The Emmaus boys lacrosse team had to be happy to look across the field and see another team besides rival Parkland.
The last two games that the Green Hornets played were against the Trojans, and both were losses, 12-9 in the regular season finale and 13-9 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference semifinals.
After two straight defeats, Emmaus was looking for some momentum and wanted to keep its 2017 campaign going when it hosted Pleasant Valley in the first round of the District 2-11 Class 3A boys lacrosse subregional tournament.
The Bears may have squared off against the Green Hornets at the wrong time, and the final score showed that as Emmaus scored 11 first-half goals and had a strong defensive showing in winning 16-0 last Thursday night at Emmaus High School’s Memorial Field.
Eight different Green Hornets players scored, including four that tallied multiple goals.
“All week at practice we’ve been working on moving the ball around and trying to get good opportunities for everyone to be able to contribute,” said senior Konnor Haldeman. “We wanted to share the ball and have open looks to have a better chance to score. We passed the ball well tonight, and it was good to see all the goals we put up.”
Haldeman tallied three of his game-high five goals in the first quarter, when Emmaus (12-8) jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead. Two from Gabe Vansuch and one each from Tyler Corpora and Bennett Nakao gave the Green Hornets a comfortable advantage, and were never threatened from there.
Three different goalies had their hands in the shutout. Senior Ricky Milker started and played the first half, making one save. Then Levin Sarver and Johnnie Williams each made a save in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
Haldeman tallied two more in the second quarter, and Corpora and Liam Gilley added one each as Emmaus went into halftime leading 11-0.
From there, Hornet head coach Scott Ketcham was able to give plenty of underclassman some playoff experience.
Adam Conway contributed three goals in the third, and Grant Hawkins and Cole Scott both added goals in the final quarter.
Corpora (3), Nakao (2), Brent Meilinger (2), Jared Baker, Chris Schmitt and Evan Bhagat all assisted on goals.
“It was important for us to get a lead early,” said Haldeman. “We’ve lost the last two games and we didn’t want to continue that trend and have the season be over. To not only be able to win, but have a lot of guys contribute and see the field was good for our program. Now we have to focus on the next game.”
Emmaus, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, played District 2’s Delaware Valley (13-5), the No. 2 seed, in Tuesday’s semifinal round. That game was played after Press deadlines.
A win Tuesday would likely force a fourth meeting against top-seeded Parkland in Thursday’s finals at Lehigh University. The Trojans faced No. 4 Easton in Tuesday’s semifinals.
