Tanczos sets D-11 discus mark
Bethlehem Catholic senior Rachel Tanczos set a new district record in the discus with a throw of 144-9 at the District XI Class 3A Track and Field Championships which were held last Tuesday and Wednesday at Blue Mountain High School.
“I’m not really sure [how I did it]. It’s perfect weather, and the circle was really smooth and really fast,” Tanczos said. “I haven’t been having great practices the couple of days leading up to this. I threw, and I saw it went past 140, and I was pretty shocked because I didn’t think it went that far.”
Tanczos easily clinched the district gold medal with that throw on Wednesday. Liberty senior Jackie Arthur won the silver medal with a throw of 126-03, and fellow Hurricane Sydney Wilson came in fourth with a throw of 111-07.
Arthur won district gold in the shot put with a throw of 39-00.50 on Tuesday.
“I felt a lot more confident yesterday,” said Arthur on Wednesday. “I felt about 90-percent that I had more power in me. I’m satisfied. It wasn’t my best, but it does make me happy. It’s a winning streak for me.”
Tanczos won the silver medal in the shot put with a throw of 35-10.50, and Wilson came in third with a throw of 34-11.50.
Bethlehem Catholic senior Tessa Zamolyi won district silver in the javelin with a throw of 125-04.
“It feels great. I finally accomplished my goal to make it to states,” said Zamolyi. “I was trying to relax more this week, and I didn’t overpressure myself.”
Zamolyi reached 125-04 on her second throw in the final round despite the stress that was looming at the time.
“I have to give a shout out to Jackie [Arthur] because she has supported me, and [Liberty’s] Eleni [Prodes] also really supported me throughout all the years of javelin, especially because they’re both from another school,” Zamolyi said. “And [Becahi’s] Sarah Cuttic has been with me at every practice.”
Arthur placed third in the javelin with a throw of 123-05.
The PIAA State Track and Field Meet is scheduled for May 26 and 27 at Shippensburg University.
