Rovers bounce FHS from girls and boys D-11 tourney

Freedom’s girls lacrosse team enjoyed a memorable season, but the Patriots weren’t able to overcome top-seeded Easton Monday night in the District 11 3A semifinals at Northampton.

The Rovers won by a 15-3 margin, giving them their third win of the season over Freedom, as they move to Wednesday’s final against second-seeded Parkland.

Emily Tuturice scored six goals for Easton (16-1) in Monday’s win.

The season ending run for the Patriots (13-8) saw them finish in the top four of the East Penn Conference, as well as hosting and registering their first district playoff win over Delaware Valley last week.

It was a year of progress for the program, who also saw senior midfielder, Emily Rowan, take league MVP honors.

“Easton is a strong team and they have some great athletes and are well coached,” said head coach Charis Innarella. “We had some close games [with Easton] this season.”

It was a different story in their district opener against Del Val last week, as a 4-4 halftime score saw Freedom overpower the attack in the second half with an 8-1 scoring advantage.

Abby Rowan scored four goals in the win and Emily Rowan added three goals and an assist.

“Hosting and winning our first district game ever was a great achievement,” said Innarella. “I am so proud of how we turned things around in the second half of that game. This season has been so enjoyable. As coaches we just want the best for them.”

The Freedom boys also saw their season come to an end at the hands of Easton last week, losing in the district quarterfinals 17-3.

Bailey Tuturice had five goals for the Rovers to pace them to yesterday’s semifinal contest with Parkland.

The Pates ended their year at 11-8 overall.

“I think we made a statement to the league that we’re an up and coming team that the top tier teams won’t be able to look past,” said head coach Tony Fabrizio on what he thought the program accomplished this year. “We met our goals this season of winning our division, and making the district playoffs.

“What we took away from this season, is that we proved to ourselves we can compete with those top tier teams.

“As I said to the boys after the district game, it’s pretty miraculous for a team to go from 4-11, and never having a .500 record two years ago, to two consecutive .500 plus seasons and two appearances in the district quarterfinals. I think this year we set a standard of what Freedom will be in the future.”
