Pates, ’Canes prep for district openers
Liberty and Freedom will both open up the District 11 6A playoffs at home Wednesday afternoon.
The second-seeded Hurricanes will look to bounce back from their loss to Parkland in the East Penn Conference championship last Friday night when they square off against Nazareth (No. 7 seed) or Pleasant Valley (No. 10 seed).
Freedom (16-5) faces a tricky opponent in their 4-5 matchup when Pocono Mountain East makes the trip to Bethlehem.
The Cardinals (15-5) will likely throw out EPC MVP Zach McCambley in their playoff opener, as the Coastal Carolina commit, is the best arm in the league.
Freedom head coach Nick D’Amico fully knows that Wednesday’s task will be challenging, as this will be the first encounter between the two teams this season.
“He [McCambley] is one of the top pitchers in the league so it’s going to be a grind and hopefully we end up on the winning side,” said D’Amico. “We are throwing Alec Huertas who has been very good for us this year.”
Huertas is 5-2 this season with an 0.83 ERA.
If Wednesday comes down to a pitching duel, the Pates hope that they can muster enough for the win or force McCambley out sooner than later on the mound with the pitch count.
“We are going to need to be play excellent defense and get good quality at bats against a very good pitcher,” said D’Amico.
Liberty head coach Andy Pitsilos wasn’t sure who he planned to throw on Wednesday, as the last time they played Nazareth, Liberty needed a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to come back for a 6-5 win. The ’Canes did not play PV this year.
After suffering only their third loss of the season against the Trojans last week, Pitsilos hopes his team is primed for a run at a district title.
“I hope it motivates our guys to play well in districts,” he said. “We just need to focus on playing our game and not trying to do more than what we are good at.”
