Hawks get a second chance with D-11 berth

Bethlehem Catholic may have suffered through a tough spring season, but the Golden Hawks aren’t worried about that any longer.

Becahi qualified for the District 11 4A baseball playoffs as a sixth-seed despite having a 6-14 season mark, as they head into Wednesday’s battle with fellow Catholic school rival, third-seeded Allentown Central Catholic, who also enter the tourney with a sub .500 mark of 7-13.

In the end, head coach Mike Grasso doesn’t really care about the record of his team. He’s just happy they have a shot to keep playing for a championship, thanks to the PIAA adopting a six-class system this school year.

“We’re looking forward to playing Wednesday and starting a new season,” said Grasso. “It’s been a crazy year for us, losing five games by one run and dealing with injuries throughout the year, but the kids are ready for this. We’re excited to be back in the postseason.”

The last time both teams squared off against each other was on May 1, when Central handed Becahi a 10-1 defeat.

Thomas Minutella got the win for the Vikings in that contest, as Central scored in each of the first four innings.

Grasso doesn’t believe that will be the case on Wednesday when Matt Morrow will start for the Hawks.

Morrow is 2-2 on the year with a 2.1 ERA, but has been the victim of not getting much run support this season.

If the Hawks want to do anything in this tournament, they’ll certainly need good pitching and quality hitting to make any noise.

Grasso hopes Morrow will bring that confidence to the team this week with a chance to play second-seeded Wilson (13-7) in next Monday’s semifinals.

“Matt has really been brilliant for us on the mound this season,” Grasso said. “Every time he’s on the mound he gives us a chance. He’s one of the best pitchers in the area.”

Grasso also hopes that playing the type of schedule the Hawks had to endure this season will pay dividends in the bracket.

“Our schedule is the biggest advantage we have going into districts,” he said. “I think we’ve been playing better lately. We just lost to [top-seeded] Pottsville 4-3 last week, so we’re right there. We just have to play well.”
