Street captures gold

Liberty’s Darian Street rose to the challenge and clinched the gold medal in the long jump at the East Penn Conference Track and Field Championships last Wednesday at East Stroudsburg South High School.

“Yes, I felt a little challenged today. Thank God I pulled through,” Street said.

Street’s jump was 22-03.75. Pleasant Valley’s Michael Mitchell placed second with a 21-11.50.

“I was getting a little nervous, but I thought I have to go for it,” said Street. “I wasn’t getting enough height on takeoff, and I hurt my ankle on one, but it’s fine.”

Street made 22-03.75 on his first jump. Mitchell reached 21-11.50 on his second.

“[The medal] feels great. My goal is three medals, leagues, districts, and states,” Street said. “Hopefully, I can accomplish that in the next two weeks.”

Freedom’s Kyree Marshburn, Nick King, Cyrus Thompson, and Dashaun Peterson won the silver medal in the 4x1 relay.

“It feels great. This is the first time in awhile that Freedom won a medal in the 4x1 relay,” said Thompson. “We knew in our heads we wanted to win.”

Pocono Mountain West placed first in 43.29.

“By the time Cyrus got the baton to me, we were in second,” said Peterson, who anchored. “[Pocono Mountain West] had a good 10 meters on me, but I was getting closer.”

Freedom’s time was 43.67.

“I thought I was in a pretty good position, but I could always get out a little faster,” King said.

Nazareth was right behind with a time of 43.87.

“It was nerve-wracking because this is the first time we weren’t in first place the whole time,” said Marshburn. “There’s always room for improvement. Our next step is the school record.”

Liberty’s Trevor Harris won a fourth place medal in the shot put.

“I’m happy with it. It’s about consistency, and I was prepared,” Harris said. “Coach D’Emilio’s been having me keep my shoulders square. That’s everything.”

Harris’s throw was 44-1.

“I didn’t actually plan on medaling, but it definitely pushed me once I saw what everyone else could do while I was throwing.”
