Rovers defeat Pates

The Freedom Patriots scored one run in the third inning in their 11-1 loss to Easton on Monday, but two games are left in the regular season for the Pates.

“I knew we had a girl in scoring position, and I knew I had to get her in,” said Patriot center fielder Julia Roman, whose base hit knocked in Alexa Fancera.

With the game still within reach, Freedom trailed 3-1, but the Red Rovers scored five runs in the fourth inning, three on a triple by Courtney Grundhauser.

In the bottom of the fourth, Freedom right fielder Shay Banas had a base hit with two outs, a position she has found herself in countless times.

“I don’t really feel the pressure because I’m usually up on two outs, so I got used to it,” Banas said. “The second time [I was thinking] I’m going to get a hit.”

Samantha Barton singled to right center for the Patriots in the sixth inning, and Maddie Sheffer walked, but Freedom was held scoreless. Sheffer also had a hit to left field in the second inning when the Patriots left the bases loaded.

Easton ended its scoring on a two-run home run by Lina Ramos in the seventh inning, and Freedom ended the attack when Banas made a running catch in right field.

“I just ran as fast as I could,” said Banas. “I thought Julia would get it, but she said, ‘You. You.’”

Freedom will host Liberty this Wednesday, which is also senior night for the Pates, who will be graduating Banas, Jana Boksan, and Camryn Spina.

“It’s a big game, and it would be really nice to win,” Roman said. “We’re not in playoffs, so [winning] is our goal now.”
