LHS girls top Becahi
When the Hurricanes tell Liberty softball coach Sam Carrodo that they’ve got this, he listens, even when they’re trailing 6-3 after four innings against Bethlehem Catholic, but the Hurricanes made good on their word and won 15-11 last week at Becahi.
“I trust them,” Carrodo said.
And so, the fifth inning began with Kristin Kaleycik’s lead off base hit to left field.
“I pulled it a little, but the fact that I got on base was huge because the inning started good runs,” Kaleycik said.
Cailin Donegan followed up with a base hit, and Mikayla Ruppert reached first on an error while Kaleycik scored.
Jess Watts then had a double which tied the game, and it was game on for Liberty and Becahi.
“It felt good, and knowing I brought the team back up, and hearing the team screaming, it was really, really good,” said Watts.
Apryl Cruz had a base hit to short center, scoring Watts who had stolen third, and Cruz scored on a sacrifice fly putting the Hurricanes ahead 8-6.
Liberty had five more runs in the sixth inning, the last two on RBI’s by Alexa Berger.
“I just knew it was a back and forth game, so I put my bat out there,” said Berger.
Berger also made a big catch at shortstop after Becahi’s Cate Erickson hit a home run, Maddie Ensley had a base hit, and Jess Indelicato hit a triple.
“I just saw in my mind I couldn’t let it drop, and I had to make a full effort,” Berger said. “I was really trying not to let the pressure get to me.”
Also in the sixth inning, Becahi’s Tasha Miner had a double, Alexis Lopez hit a double, and Alex Pannucio had a base hit, but was called out at third on a hit by Morgan Christine.
“Mikayla [Ruppert] made an amazing throw,” said Kaleycik, who plays third base. “I tried to angle myself a little to the left, and the ball bounced right into my glove, and as soon as I caught it, I sweep tagged her.”
Heading into the seventh inning, the Hurricanes led 13-11.
Watts had another hit and her sixth RBI of the game.
“I knew they were catching up, and I listened to [assistant coach] Dior [George], so I was relaxed,” Watts said.
In addition, Watts and Cruz made a big double play in the third inning after Cruz made a catch and threw to Watts, tagging out the runner at first base.
“It was scary when I threw the ball, but Jess really saved me on that,” Cruz said. “It was like a big rush, a lot of adrenaline.”
Earlier in the game, Skilee Diaz had a triple and scored on a base hit by Reyna DeJesus.
“I had two strikes on me, but I had to help the team out, so I choked up and put the bat on the ball,” said Diaz.
The Hurricanes are hoping to have clinched their division with a victory over Dieruff early this week.
