Incumbent mayor faces challenge

Longtime Northampton Mayor Thomas D. Reenock will be challenged in the May 16 primary election by John “Jake” Yurish, who is also no stranger to public service in the borough. Both are Democrats. Voters will choose just one candidate.

The Press asked the candidates the following question: Why should residents vote for you?

Their responses follow.

Thomas D. Reenock

A good leader must be a good listener and recognize the needs of the residents. As mayor and lifelong resident, my ambitions are always in and for the borough. I’ve attended annual state conferences and network with officials from boroughs across the commonwealth, discussing common problems and resolving issues. Having served on numerous boards, memberships and organizations over the years, I feel I’m well-rounded and have an understanding of the people’s needs.

With your vote, I’m honored to continue my responsibility to serve the residents and to keep leading toward a productive future for our “community of unity.”

John “Jake” Yurish

During my 12 years as a member of council and as council president, I have demonstrated my ability to be a very qualified representative of the borough. As a lifelong resident of Northampton, I have the same concerns as my neighbors and will make myself accessible to help all constituents of the borough feel their issues are being heard and carefully addressed in a respectful and timely manner.

I believe that after 24 years, Northampton is ready for a new face with new ideas and a leader who will always seek solutions in the best interest of the entire community.
