Liberty eyes EPC berth
The one thing that each Bethlehem school has cemented with a week left in the regular season is a spot in the District 11 playoffs.
Liberty, Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic have each punched a ticket to districts, as they round out their calendar, but Liberty still has their sights on grabbing the fourth and final spot for the East Penn Conference playoffs.
The Hurricanes (9-4, 8-4) hold the fourth spot in the EPC race with league matches against Whitehall (12-1) on Wednesday and Pocono Mountain East (1-13) on Thursday.
Northampton (8-4, 7-4), Nazareth (9-4, 7-4), Freedom (10-6, 6-6) and Bethlehem Catholic (6-6, 5-6) round out the next four teams looking for the final spot, one that the Hurricanes hope they can hang onto.
“Considering how young our team is, we’re pleased with the progress we’ve seen,” said head coach Neiad Ammary. “Qualifying for districts is important because the postseason offers kids a high-stakes atmosphere of intense competition, and those experiences are likely to pay off as they continue their careers.
“As far as EPC’s, I think we’ll be somewhere in the mix and hope we qualify.”
Nazareth may have the best chance of challenging the Hurricanes for the EPC berth, as they hold a tiebreaker over the ’Canes with a victory over them earlier this season.
Ammary is happy with what he’s seen from the team this season, as Liberty was expected to be in rebuilding mode.
Instead, the Hurricanes are battling, with all of their losses coming to the top teams in the conference.
“All four of our losses have come at the hands of strong teams - Whitehall, Emmaus, Parkland, and Nazareth,” he said. “I’d say we were competitive in all of those matches except for the Parkland match.
“I just want the team to be focused on getting better each day in practice. We have been changing lineups, trying new drills and finding ways to challenge ourselves as the season goes on.”
Freedom’s only match this week comes on Thursday against Emmaus (12-0), who sits atop the conference currently. A loss there could end the Patriots hopes for the EPC playoffs.
Bethlehem Catholic had lost three straight heading into Monday’s 25-12, 25-17, 25-15 victory over Pocono Mountain West.
Emmaus, Liberty and Nazareth handed the Hawks three straight losses, as they are realistically a long shot to make a run at the league playoffs.
With Parkland (11-1) and Allen (3-10) this week, the Hawks are primed to go 2-1 this week.
