EPC tennis tourney halted, districts begin

The District 11 singles tournament got under way on Monday at Lehigh University.

Andrew Hozza was the only K-Kid to advance to the second round, which will take place April 26, after Press deadlines.

Hozza was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Josh Becker of Eastburg North. His next opponent is Parkland’s Aneesh Kapoor, who won 6-1, 6-0 over Najja Francis of Pleasant Valley.

Brandon Peters had to take on the top seed in Ben Tauber of Nazareth and he lost 6-0, 6-0. Dom Jackson fell to six-seed Leland Addison of Easton 6-2, 6-0.

The Northampton tennis team saw a couple of victories as the East Penn Conference tennis tournament. The tournament was halted because of weather and will have to be finished another time.

At two singles, Hozza won his opening match 8-0 over Francis of Pleasant Valley. Hozza came in as the four seed. He would fall to Central’s Johnson Zhou, the five seed 8-4. Liberty’s Louis Gruber advanced to the finals but the other semifinal between Gabe Knowles of Nazareth and Dmytro Petrov of Eastburg South needs to be completed.

Peters, at three singles, also won his opening match, defeating Tyler Fitch of Easton 8-0. Peters lost to Jacob Berg of Liberty 8-0. Both semifinals need to be played at three singles.

At number-two doubles, Trevor Hanuschak and Lucas Foulk were 8-0 winners over James Brown and Josh Flores of Dieruff. Hanuschak and Foulk ran into the top seed of Kishan Unjia and Jesse Hence of Parkland and lost 8-0. The Parkland duo is awaiting their opponent in the finals.

At number-four doubles, Dan Fox and Nick Hudak were 8-3 winners over Crew Bunn and Jordan Berkowitz of Eastburg South. Fox and Hudak would fall 8-3 to Liberty’s Marc Burritt and Jacob Wong who advanced to the semis.

At one singles, Jackson lost his opening round match to Stroudsburg’s Brycem Butz 8-1. Tauber of Nazareth, the top seed, will take on Liberty’s Dan Lynn, the two seed in the finals.

At three-doubles, Chris Nemeth and Jake Flood lost 8-0 to Tyler Fahrenkopf and Brian Kagel of Pleasant Valley.
