Rain halts EPC tennis tournament

Liberty tennis players Dan Lynn, Louis Gruber, and Jacob Berg have advanced to the finals in the East Penn Conference Tennis Tournament which was played last Friday and Saturday at Freedom High School.

Lynn began his match against Nazareth’s Ben Tauber at number one singles, but it was stopped due to rain and will be continued at time to be determined.

Down 2-5, Lynn won the second game and the seventh game on Saturday.

“Normally, he beats me most of the time. He’ll stay in the point and wait off of me to miss,” said Lynn, who is friends with Tauber off the court. “I just go out and play whoever is across from me. I don’t have a target on anyone’s back.”

The last time Lynn and Tauber competed against each other, Tauber won 6-4, 6-4.

“They are good competitors, and they know each other well,” said Liberty coach Leo Schnalzer. “I think the match will be determined by who makes the most unforced errors.”

Earlier in the tournament, Lynn defeated Parkland’s Aneesh Kapoor 10-3, Central Catholic’s Chris Alvarez 8-4, and Freedom’s Jon Fiorentino 8-2.

“It was a good match [against Kapoor]. I haven’t played him in awhile, so I didn’t know how it would be,” Lynn said.

Gruber won his quarterfinal match against Central Catholic’s Johnson Zhou 10-0. The Hurricane freshman also defeated Stroudsburg’s Michael Irlbeck 8-0 and Pocono Mountain West’s Tom Gaudette 8-0.

Berg won matches against East Stroudsburg North’s Reggie Gesicho, and Northampton’s Brandon Peters.
