Borough to explore dog park idea

At Coplay Borough Council’s regular meeting April 11, Councilman Stephen Burker asked other members of council to consider a dog park for the borough.

“Several residents approached me and asked that I mention it to see what the level of support is on council,” he said.

Mayor Dean Molitoris and Councilman Mark Molitoris were positive about pursuing the project.

“I have been approached also, and I think it is something we should consider,” the mayor said.

Council President Louis Bodish did not comment on the project.

Councilman Charles Sodl suggested the park could be incorporated into the proposed upgrade of Saylor Park.

Burker based his suggestion on a park in nearby East Allen Township.

“They are having success with it, and it seems popular. Primarily, it’s a fenced-in area with a lot of legal disclaimers posted,” he said.

According to Burker, dog parks are usually separated in some way to group the dogs by size.

Council gave Burker the go-ahead to explore the option and see what needs to be done. He indicated he would contact the Borough of Bath to see some of its planning. Bath is in the early stages of establishing a dog park.

“Talking to them will give us an idea of what we need to plan and what problems they are encountering,” Burker said.

Burker indicated to council that no plans were made and the idea is still in the exploratory stage.

“If there is anyone in the borough that wants to be part of the project, let me know. We need ideas on the best way to get this park into the borough,” he said.

In other action, township Engineer Daniel Witczak approved Dirt Work Solutions as the low-cost bidder on a stormwater reconstruction project. The cost of the project was adjusted to fit within the guidelines of the Community Development Block Grant the borough will use to fund the effort. According to Witczak, curbing and sidewalk projects along both Hokendauqua Street and Front Street are ready to proceed as soon as construction is buttoned up.

“We are experiencing some delays from UGI,” he said. “We need them to complete their repair projects so we can get everything finalized.”

Council approved a motion to hire Ryan Emerich as a new full-time police officer. His appointment is conditional upon him completing a physical agility test. Police Chief Vincent Genovese expects the testing to be completed by the end of the month. Emerich will fill some of the borough’s scheduling voids.

Council accepted the resignation of Chris Schmidt as a member of the borough’s park & recreation board. Burker is looking for a replacement.

Bodish reminded residents that May 17 and 18 are scheduled for street sweeping. Cars must be moved.

May 20 is tire drop-off date at the parking lot near the Saylor Kilns.

May 21 is the day the borough will start picking up yard waste.
