Zoners OK plans for fire training center in borough

Northampton Borough Fire Department’s plans for a fire training center on borough-owned property have received a nod from the zoning board, borough Manager LeRoy Brobst confirmed Monday.

The proposal to use a former quarry site off Howertown Road was before borough council at its April 6 meeting. No council member expressed opposition, although one questioned if zoning regulations would be met for such a project.

“Is it allowed?” asked Councilman Robert McHale. “You have residences on both sides.”

“I’m all for it,” McHale continued, noting he did not want his comments misconstrued.

Brobst brought the fire department’s request before council, adding, “[The fire department is] asking for your blessing to proceed.”

The borough owns the land, and the zoning board has now approved the location after reviewing the plans.

According to the plans submitted by the fire department, Brobst added, “The fire department would need assistance in digging the footers for two buildings. One would be a 50-foot-by-50-foot roof simulator, and the other would be a 25-square-foot maze. They are also asking for a stone entrance and exit.”

In other business, council approved a request for a handicapped parking zone at 802 Siegfried Ave. Police Chief Ron Morey reviewed the request and recommended council give its consent.

Morey was also given permission to attend a training class April 24-25 at Allentown Police Academy. The topic is “De-escalation Train the Trainer.” The cost is $375.

Also, council approved a temporary detentions procedures policy addition in the borough police procedural manual.

Councilman Anthony Pristash, building, land and recreation committee chairman, reported arrangements were made to have Kilts in the Park perform 2:30-4:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at Municipal Park.
