Angerman, Kids ready for next level

Jared Angerman knew something wasn’t quite right with the team last year.

The current Northampton senior believed last year’s senior players weren’t all that comfortable with their roles on the team.

“The seniors were really nervous for whatever reason about last year,” Angerman said. “They just didn’t seem comfortable. I don’t know how much it affected the team. But the seniors this year are ready to take this team to the next level.”

Angerman is one of a handful of seniors on the Konkrete Kids roster this season. After losing 10 seniors to graduation, Northampton is 5-0 this year. They finished last year with a 10-10 record and lost in the opening-round of the district playoffs.

This year, Angerman and his teammates are ready to set a new pace.

“We are really anxious and we are really excited about the season,” said Angerman. “I think we have a really good chemistry here with everyone. There are plenty of positive feelings that are around the team.

“It’s really fun to be here and that really wasn’t the case last year. We honestly believe that we can compete for a championship.”

Angerman is among several players who have played together through the years. He sees the influx of players from last year’s JV team to be beneficial.

“Some of these kids who I have played with all my life have won championships in the past,” Angerman said. “We know each other very well and we all know what we can do.

“We all have worked hard and have put a lot of time into it. We believe we can win it. The sophomores and the juniors have really mixed well with everyone. We all really have pulled together and we are ready to go.”

Angerman, a second baseman who hit .393 last season, spent the offseason participating in the team’s winter workouts and also worked out at Moravian College. He admits that last season proved to be the turning point in his high school career.

“During my junior year, I really began to feel comfortable with everything,” he said. “I gained a lot of confidence and really came into my own. Heading into this season, I feel like I have all the confidence in the world.”

Head coach Mick Sugra has seen a similar situation.

“Jared was one of our top hitters last year,” said Sugra. “He is one of the hardest workers on the team and one of our leaders.”

Angerman plans to attend Wilkes University next fall to continue his baseball career.

“When I visited Wilkes, I really liked it,” said Angerman, who will pursue a career in environmental science. “I had playing baseball in mind and I talked to their coach. I also was accepted at Penn State, but I wanted to play baseball.

“When I talked more to the coach (at Wilkes), he told me all about the program. I knew it was going to be a good fit for me.”

Until then, Angerman plans to leave Northampton on a high note.

“We have good vibes about this year,” he added. “We all thought we came together after last year. This will be a good year for us.”
