Northampton man takes first in nature center photo contest

The photography contest held at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center for the fourth year was the largest ever. One hundred fifty-two photographs were submitted, and 90 were chosen for exhibit.

Submission categories were Insects and Amphibians, Macro of Nature, Your Backyard within Walking Distance and Youth.

The jurors were Phil Campbell, Paul Laincz, Josh Finsel and Anita Collins.

Jim Figlar, of Northampton, took first place in the Insects and Amphibians category, with his photograph titled “Inchworm.” His photo shows an inchworm on the lower beak of a Golden-Winged Warbler.

Both the first and second places in the People’s Choice award were in the youth category.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to stretch a little bit,” said an art teacher about the youth entries.

Many of the photographs had sale prices. Collins, a member of the Entomological Society of America, said there were more sales than in previous years.

She added there were a lot of good photographs and that the society is looking for photographs for its 2018 calendar. Information can be found at entsoc.org.

Next year’s categories for the photography contest will be Water, Lehigh Gap Nature Center, Black and White and Youth.
