Standoff ends safely
Whitehall Township police officers on Saturday were called to the 1200 block of Broad Street in response to a report of an armed man who barricaded himself inside an apartment complex.
According to a news release from Chief Michael Marks, police received a domestic violence call 11:38 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Zachary Weller, 31, residence unknown, armed with a knife. After being confronted by police, he barricaded himself inside an apartment, according to the report.
Whitehall Township Police Lt. Gregory Bealer told The Press Monday afternoon the standoff with Weller lasted six to seven hours.
The Lehigh County Municipal Response Team (MERT) and a crisis response team assisted in an attempt to have the suspect surrender. After negotiators made contact for several hours with Weller, MERT team members were able to take the man into custody after forcing entry, the report stated.
Nearby apartments were also evacuated for safety reasons.
Bealer said no injuries were reported.
Weller has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, simple assault with a weapon, unlawful restraint, terrorist threats, false imprisonment and recklessly endangering another person, Bealer said.
He is currently in Lehigh County Prison.
Lehigh County Management, Cetronia Ambulance Corps, Whitehall Township fire police, Lehigh County detectives, Lehigh County 911 center, Catasauqua Borough Police Department, Northampton County Emergency and Goodwill Fire Company assisted township police.
