E. Allen names new board member

During its March 9 meeting, East Allen Township Board of Supervisors filled a vacant position on the board by appointing Robert Mills to assume the remaining term of former board member Christopher Colitis.

Colitis left the board because he moved out of the township.

“We were looking for someone who understands the township’s issues, has attended meetings and can be elected if he chooses to run,” Chairman Roger Unangst said.

Supervisor Peggy Moser was impressed with another candidate, although she did not nominate her choice.

“I was most impressed with the number and quality of the candidates [who] applied for the position,” Unangst said. “Each of them was anxious to serve the township and had impressive backgrounds. We have other openings on boards and commissions in the township, and we would be happy to appoint any of the candidates to an open position.”

Mills is scheduled to be sworn in at the next supervisors meeting.

Prior to the selection of the new member of the board of supervisors, Moser asked council to rescind an obligation to cover health insurance costs. Seiple noted the township has a “Cadillac Plan” with costs per individual approaching $13,000 annually. Family policies are around $25,000.

“Supervisors meet twice a month. I know there is other work that is done other than meetings, but we can make better use of the funds,” Moser said.

None of the serving supervisors avail themselves of the plan. The board voted to suspend the option to provide health care insurance.

Seiple introduced several priority projects to be discussed over the next few workshop sessions. Among the projects are a deteriorating culvert on Dogwood Road and stormwater management along the Monocacy Creek.

Public works also is looking to replace a water line in Bicentennial Park. The primary connection to the main water line is completed. This branch from the water distribution point is leaking and causing some loss of pressure.

Township Manager Deborah Seiple introduced two new employees at the meeting.

John Chavanic was hired by the public works department as part of the road crew. He has proven skills in operating the heavy equipment, Seiple said.

Christina Moran has been added to the office staff. She brings with her skills in accounting and bookkeeping, according to Seiple.
