Board confirms Sallit as borough schools principal
The acting principal of Borough Elementary Schools has been appointed to lead the two borough schools in Northampton Area School District.
Renee Sallit, acting principal, was appointed principal of Borough Elementary Schools, effective March 14, at a salary of $91,500, prorated, with benefits, by a vote of 8-0, with one school director absent, at the March 13 board meeting in the district administration building.
Sallit, named acting principal Jan. 3, succeeds former borough schools principal Carol Cunningham, longtime district employee who retired.
Following the vote on her appointment, Sallit praised the district.
“I remember being here three years ago and telling you I wasn’t going to let you down,” Sallit told school directors, referring to the meeting when the board hired her as borough schools assistant principal.
“I’ve been in other districts before coming here. It remains second to none,” Sallit said of NASD. “My family is extremely grateful to you.”
Sallit and her husband, Andrew, an Allentown School District teacher, live in Lower Macungie Township with their sons, Xayden, 8, and Xyler, 6, and daughter, Xella, 3.
About 600 students attend the borough schools, which include Siegfried Elementary School, for grades 1-5, and Franklin Elementary School, which is kindergarten only.
Sallit said her mission at the borough schools is “building our community of students and family. That has been one of our focuses.”
NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph Kovalchik said of Sallit, “Renee has been a valuable asset to our school district. She has added valuable insight into curriculum as well as the use of technology.
“She has developed a rapport with the parents as well as the borough schools administration,” Kovalchik said of Sallit.
Prior to being hired by NASD, Sallit was assistant principal at Trexler Middle School in the Allentown School District. She began her teaching career as a math teacher at Northwestern Lehigh High School in the Northwestern Lehigh School District.
She received a master’s degree and principal certification from Cabrini College and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, with a concentration in math, from East Stroudsburg University. She is a Parkland High School, Class of 2003, graduate.
In other business at the March 13 meeting, Kovalchik said he and NASD Business Administrator Terry Leh will update school directors concerning the 2017-18 district budget at the April 10 or 24 board meeting.
“We’ll have a better idea where we stand on retirements and enrollments,” Kovalchik said.
