Girls fall to Nazareth, Parkland up next

Disappointment was evident after Northampton’s 53-42 loss to Nazareth in the District 11 Class 6A girls’ basketball semifinal on Monday night at Catasauqua High School, yet hope remained for a chance to make the state tournament with a win in the consolation game on Thursday.

“I thought we would be where we are, one of the top four,” said Northampton coach Jeff Jacksits. “It’s a matter of nights, and what’s going on, and who has hot hands, and tonight, we didn’t.”

It was the second half when the K-Kids did not seem themselves, or the selves they could be. The Kids had defeated Nazareth before, and lost to them twice, the most recent game by two points.

“Once we start falling behind in double digits, it’s tough to come back on that,” Jacksits said. “At halftime, we wanted to free up Victoria Keenan a little, set up some high screens.”

Victoria Keenan hit a three to open the third quarter, and her jumper soon after pulled the Kids to within two, 25-23, but Northampton had difficulty connecting after that and momentum started to settle on Nazareth’s side.

Jessica Durnin and Zoe DeAngelo scored for the Blue Eagles, and DeAngelo was fouled, but missed the free throw. Durnin got the rebound and scored to put Nazareth ahead 31-23.

In the fourth quarter, Tessa Brugler scored four points early, starting a double digit lead for the Eagles.

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well in the second half, and we didn’t get into our sets. We were supposed to be in high and low all the time, and they got some easy lay-ups,” said Jacksits.

Northampton will take on Parkland in the Class 6A consolation game this Thursday at 6 p.m. at Freedom High School. Nazareth and Easton will face off for the district title at 7:30 p.m., also at Freedom.
