NAA seeks field name change
Northampton Athletic Association (NAA) has requested the borough name the NAA’s baseball/softball grounds on Al Erdosy Drive the Stephen “Deets” Guttman complex, honoring Guttman for his decades of service to the organization.
The complex is owned by the borough.
Borough council is expected to act on the NAA’s request at its March 2 meeting.
The request has the support of borough Manager LeRoy Brobst.
Stating he has been approached by NAA members about the name change, Brobst said, “Guttman has been associated with the NAA since the 1960s. He unselfishly gave countless hours as a volunteer and is a goodwill ambassador for the organization.”
Should council agree to the request, the ceremony naming the grounds would take place April 29 during NAA’s opening day program.
Earlier, the borough named a room at the borough recreation center in tribute to Guttman, citing his service to the center on Lerchenmiller Drive.
In other news, Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Sr., administration and finance committee chairman, reported RCN has paid the borough $162,250 in franchise fees for 2016, and Service Electric submitted a $5,733 payment for 2016 franchise fees.
And 2017 refuse fee payments are on target; thus far, $623,611 in payments have been received.
The borough will be represented at the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs Conference, set for May in Hershey, by Mayor Thomas Reenock, Brobst and council members Judy Kutzler and Lopsonzski Sr.
Council agreed to a request from the borough’s three Lutheran churches to utilize the two pavilions at Municipal Park June 11 for a community service and picnic. Council waived rental fees for the use of the two pavilions for this annual church event.
