Coplay fills positions

At its regular meeting Feb. 14, Coplay Borough Council moved to fill vacant administrative positions in the borough.

Brandyn Bechtel was appointed assistant fire chief.

Gloria Reinert will be the tax assessor.

Joe Gill is the new health inspector.

The appointments are effective immediately.

Council approved a nearly $7,000 award to ICS Heating and Air for air conditioning units at the borough’s library. The company had installed two other units in the library. Council wanted to have the same company responsible for all the units in the library. Each unit carries an annual maintenance contract.

In other borough news, Councilman Stephen Burker reported the scoreboard dedication at Sammy Balliet Stadium is scheduled for May 27. The scoreboard is sponsored by Coca-Cola and is part of the effort to bring the stadium up to required standards needed to host playoff and championship games.

The borough has nearly $30,000 in outstanding garbage fees. Although he considers the number too high, council President Louis Bodish said it is somewhat lower than prior years. The bill is turned over to GH Harris and Associates for collections. The debt collector adds its fees to the bill. Homeowners who ignore the bill can have liens attached to their house.

Also discussed at the meeting, the borough may be getting closer to selling property it owns at 38 S. Fourth St. The borough issued a notice to quit to the tenants in the house. The tenants signed a month-to-month lease with the expectation the building would be sold at some point.

The police department and the borough received some good financial news. Morgan Stanley, the fiduciary for the police pension fund, reported the pension fund is fully funded, and no contributions are necessary for this year from the officers or the borough.

This does not mean no contributions will be needed in the future. The definition of fully funded is based on several parameters, one of which is the value of financial instruments and stock market investments.

Council passed an ordinance that revised fees for licenses, services, inspections, rentals, user fees and other related charges. Although some of the fees remained the same, certain fees were increased to match the fees charged by surrounding communities.

Coplay Town Watch will be sponsoring a fundraiser. Irish soda bread will be available for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter Sunday. Orders can be sent to Kimberly Fitzpatrick via email at k.d.fitz13@gmail.com.
