NASD in ‘complete compliance’

On a night when Northampton Area School District Board of Education members were honored for their service on the board, they learned the district received a “clean bill of health” in its annual audit.

“You have a very good audit report,” William H. Gorman, CPA, Gorman & Associates, P.C., Northampton, told board members and administrators at the Feb. 13 meeting.

“You’re in complete compliance,” said Gorman of his firm’s audit of the NASD 2015-16 school year.

School directors, administrators and those attending the meeting were treated to coffee and cookies. Board members were presented with greeting cards and posters made by district elementary school students as part of School Board Recognition Month, which is in January. The NASD board observance was postponed because of the budget presentation and Big “N” Band tribute at January’s meetings.

Gorman, in a thorough 30-minute presentation, highlighted 2015-16 district financial statements in his report distributed to school directors. He also backgrounded the audit process.

“I work for the citizens of Northampton Area School District as an independent auditor,” Gorman emphasized.

In 2015-16, the NASD fund balance was $15,364,664, a $180,068 reduction compared to 2014-15.

NASD paid $1,397,607 to the Public School Employees’ Retirement System, $85,350 in post-employee payments, $500,000 toward technology purchases and $1,850,000 for capital improvements.

The original assigned fund balance was $3,610,751. The unassigned fund balance was $7,449,869.

In lauding the school directors, who are elected but serve with no salary, NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph Kovalchik spoke individually of each board member.

“It’s a board that makes over 700 decisions for a $100 million budget,” Kovalchik noted. “You spend countless hours on committees outside of this board room.”
