W. Catty Park to house new township senior center

Whitehall Township Active Senior Lifestyle Center will have a grand opening in April at the West Catasauqua Park & Playground building, 2301 Pine St. There will be sign-ups for different activities from 10 a.m. to noon.

Township Commissioner Jeffrey Dutt, who led the project to fruition, said the first official activity for seniors will be May 2.

Volunteers are being recruited to assist with programs.

Dutt said the project has been in the making for the past year and a half and was on his platform when running for commissioner.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr., whose administration has been coordinating the senior lifestyle center, said specific details - such as the programs to be offered and days of operation - will be disclosed later.

The building earlier was the site of Lehigh County Senior Center, according to Hozza.

Dutt said the recreation commission, over the next several months, will be looking at township programs already in place in efforts to make them even better.

When he ran for commissioner, Dutt included, as part of his campaign, a proposed township recreation center. Voters in the past have voted against the idea of a recreation center when posed as an election referendum question. The issue had not been moved ahead until efforts by Dutt.
